Description

In this short, accessible and to-the-point book, European Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič argues that the EU must continue to move towards a more political union, to break decisively with the darker forces of chauvinism and mutual hostility that cast a shadow over much of Europe’s twentieth century history. While taking a realistic view of the contemporary economic and political landscape, he is positive and proactive in his proposals for the future of the EU. His emphasis is on the practical steps that can and should be taken to improve people’s lives and reconnect the EU with the citizens. And he is unapologetic in arguing for the continuing pivotal importance of the often-criticised Commission to the European project.Maroš Šefčovič’s hope in these ‘straight talks’ is to reinforce the resolve of those who believe that the EU, whatever its current imperfections, represents Europe’s best hope in these turbulent times. He warns that too many of Europe’s leaders are reluctant to stand up for the EU project and that ‘we simply cannot afford to let Eurosceptic or, even worse, anti-European parties dictate the political narrative’.This is a book for anyone who has asked ‘what now for Europe?’
