The GROW model

The GROW model is a simple, yet powerful method for goal setting and problem solving. It was developed in the United Kingdom, mainly by Sir John Whitmore and is used extensively in corporate coaching. The GROW model is a four-step sequence of questions; the acronym stands for:

  • GOALS - What do you want?
  • REALITY - What is happening now?
  • OPTIONS - What could you do?
  • WAY FORWARD - What will you do?
GROW is flexible in terms of sequence of the steps. The process usually starts with Goal questions and then explores the present with Reality questions. After this, you can move freely between the four elements, as needed. The goals may change along the way. New insights and awareness may require a return to the Reality section, followed by more Options and actions (Way Forward) related to them.
